Ocean Modeler

Santa Clara, CA - $100,000 - $140,000 Full Time Posted by: Ephemeral Carbon Posted: Thursday, 6 June 2024

Ephemeral's mission is to restore our planet's climate and ocean. We do this by harnessing the ocean's natural ability to absorb and store carbon. By enhancing our ocean's alkalinity, we can remove gigatons of CO2 while simultaneously countering ocean acidification.

About the position

We are seeking an Ocean Modeler to help develop our Ocean Alkalinity Enhancement (OAE) methods, models, and projects for marine Carbon Dioxide Removal (mCDR).

Using modeling techniques ranging from coastal to global, and modern frameworks such as Julia and Oceananigans, you'll develop and run the models which allow us to quantify carbon removal and design coastal alkalinity deployments. Your modeling will also be fundamental to the development of our monitoring methods, and you'll play a key role in selecting our project sites and developing our MRV strategy.

Working closely with other scientists, engineers, and project developers, and along with our MRV partners and academic collaborators, you'll be part of a team turning the promise of OAE as a scalable, low-cost, and permanent method of carbon removal into a reality.

What you'll do
  • Develop and validate hydrodynamic and sediment transport/morphologic models to model the dissolution of an alkalinity release in near-shore settings
  • Use coastal, regional, and global models to model the dispersal of alkalinity and eventual air/sea re-equilibration to quantify CDR
  • Work with our team and MRV partners to develop observational strategies to constrain and validate models through field trials
  • Work alongside marine biogeochemists to develop alkalinity release strategies that ensure alkalinity dissolution, the avoidance of secondary precipitation, and ecological safety
  • Evaluate prospective project sites and develop alkalinity release plans for those sites
  • Participate in industry consortia to develop best practices and standards for applying ocean models to mCDR and MRV
  • Engage with communities, interest groups, and government officials to educate and garner support for Ocean Alkalinity Enhancement as a CDR method
You should have
  • PhD in Oceanography or a related field
  • 3+ years experience working with ocean models at coastal, regional, and global scales
  • Experience with sediment transport models such as Delft3D
  • You've developed and validated new models, and have applied data assimilation to optimize models and estimate state
  • Experience nesting models and integrating them across scales
  • A solid understanding of biogeochemical models and ocean chemistry
  • You know how to develop and run models in a computationally-efficient manner
  • Experience with Julia or Oceananigans is a plus
  • A passion for taking OAE from concept to reality and restoring our climate and ocean
What we offer
  • Generous equity as an early employee
  • Health, dental, and vision benefits
  • 401(k) plan
  • 10 holidays annually + flexible PTO
  • The adventure of taking OAE from concept to reality

This is an on-site position in our Santa Clara, CA headquarters. We are open to candidates who wish to relocate, but not to hybrid or remote work. The expected salary for this position is $100,000 - $140,000 USD depending on experience.
