The Ralph H Johnson VA is looking for a Mental Health Leader to support our mental health team and the veterans in our community. The ideal lead physician will have a minimum of 6 years experience in the field with 3-5 years of leadership experience. This opportunity is eligible for recruitment incentives, PCS and education debt reduction program up to $200,000.

The Charleston Airport is just 15 minutes west of downtown, making business or family trips convenient.

Chief of Mental Health Position Details:

The Mental Health Service Line Manager must have certification by an appropriate specialty board or affirmatively established comparable competence through the credentialing process. The Mental Health Service Line Manager, in collaboration with the Medical Staff, is responsible and accountable for:

  • All professional and administrative activities within the Mental Health Service Line include selection, orientation and continuing education of staff.
  • Assuring that all licensed independent practitioners receive education on assessing and managing pain.
  • Continuing surveillance of the professional performance of all individuals in the Mental Health Service Line who have delineated clinical privileges.
  • Monitoring and evaluating the quality of care provided in the Mental Health Service Line. This includes access, efficiency, effectiveness and appropriateness of care and treatment of patients served by the Mental Health Service Line and the clinical/professional performance of all individuals in the service line. Monitoring and evaluation will include surgical case review, quality of medical histories and physical examinations, drug usage evaluation, medical record review, blood and blood components usage review, risk management, infection control, patient safety data, sentinel event data, appropriateness of clinical practice patterns, significant departures from established patterns of clinical practice, operative and other procedure(s) and utilization review as reported by committees tasked with these functions.
  • Recommending appointment and clinical privileges for each medical staff member of the Mental Health Service Line and others requesting privileges within Mental Health. When needed, Service Line Managers will consult with the appropriate specialty for re-privileging decisions.j. The Mental Health Service Line Manager will take into consideration that there is sufficient space, equipment, staffing and financial resources prior to recommending a specific privilege.
  • Recommending sufficient numbers of qualified and competent individuals to provide care, treatment, and services.
  • Assessing and recommending to the relevant hospital authority off-site sources for needed patient care, treatment, and services not provided by the department or the hospital. Coordination and integration of services/activities performed outside the Mental Health Service Line with the concurrence of the Chief of Staff.
  • The development and implementation of policies and procedures that guide and support the provision of care, treatment, and services.
  • Use of information about adverse privileged decisions for any practitioner privileged through the medical staff process.

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00am - 4:30pm

Recruitment/Relocation Incentive (Sign-on Bonus): May be authorized

Pay: Competitive salary, annual performance bonus, regular salary increases
Paid Time Off: 50-55 days of paid time off per year (26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year and possible 5 day paid absence for CME)
Retirement: Traditional federal pension (5 years vesting) and federal 401K with up to 5% in contributions by VA
Insurance: Federal health/vision/dental/term life/long-term care (many federal insurance programs can be carried into retirement)
Licensure: 1 full and unrestricted license from any US State or territory
CME: Possible $1,000 per year reimbursement (must be full-time with board certification)
Malpractice: Free liability protection with tail coverage provided
Contract: No Physician Employment Contract and no significant restriction on moonlighting
