Duties

The District Bridge Engineer is responsible for the maintenance and repair of all bridges within the Eastern District. Duties include the co-ordinating of in-house repairs and preparation of tenders for repairs to be completed by contractors, including supervision of contractor activities and payment of progress estimates. This position is responsible to ensure the completion of Levels I, II and III inspections on all bridges and to recommend rehabilitation techniques from the results of the completed inspections. Duties may also include supervision of a Steel Bridge Crew and co-ordination of special District bridge crews who may complete steel bridge painting, as well as timber or concrete bridge repairs. The District Bridge Engineer will also assist in the development and operation of the Structures Information System.

Qualifications

Bachelor of Engineering plus six (6) years related experience. Must be registered with Engineers Nova Scotia as Licensed to Practice. Candidates must have obtained or, be willing to complete, the Federal Highway Administration Qualification as a Bridge Inspector or equivalent within two (2) years of becoming the District Bridge Engineer.

A valid driver s license is required.

Must possess an understanding of the principles of the various strategies relating to bridge maintenance and rehabilitation, including the ability to interpret specifications and diagnose engineering problems relating to all facets of highway, bridge construction and maintenance. Must be able to supervise technical staff, manage multiple projects and possess strong verbal and written communication skills. Must have thorough understanding of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and general knowledge of Government policies and procedures relating to the Departmental Health, Safety and Environment Program. Computer skills for word processing (Word) and analytical applications (Excel) are required. Drafting (AutoCAD) is considered an asset.

Special Statement

PLEASE NOTE: the location of this position is flexible - incumbents will have the option to work out of Port Hawkesbury or Sydney.

Pay Grade: PR 18

Salary Range: $2,897.00 - $3,407.00 Bi-Weekly

This is a bargaining unit position initially restricted to current civil service employees represented by the Nova Scotia Government Employees Union (NSGEU).
