Summary:

As part of TransAlta's transition to clean power, the company is advancing its work on natural gas fired, combined-cycle “Repowering Projects” at its Keephills and Sundance power plants. The Repowering Projects will combine the use the existing and new infrastructure. Existing steam turbines on two generating units (Keephills 1 and Sundance 5) will be used, along with new. As well, the Repowering Projects will involve the installation of new combustion turbine generators (“CTG”) and heat recovery steam generators (“HRSG”), creating highly efficient combined-cycle units at each plant site.

The purpose of this position is to ensure that the Repowering projects are designed and constructed to the required standard so that they provide safe and reliable power to Albertans. This position exists to manage and lead the engineering efforts, support the regulatory and procurement process and ensure that the facilities perform as expected. This role will manage all third-party engineering efforts completed (EPC, Owners Engineer, other consultants) to ensure that the work is completed to the expectations and needs of the project. The individual in this role is expected to conform to the TransAlta's Professional Practice Management Plan (PPMP) and ensure performance of all engineering activities is held to the highest standard. This position can either be located at our Calgary office or at our Sundance Plant (70 kms west of Edmonton).

Accountabilities:

  • Preparing, scheduling, coordinating and monitoring technical tasks associated with the Repowering Projects
  • Assists in the preparation and implementation of the Project Execution Plan (PEP)
  • Accountable to providing cost and schedule estimating and control for activities being managed.
  • Monitors engineering work in progress and provide regular reports on the status of action items and deliverables
  • Accountable to negotiate, coordinate, manage and oversee all engineering efforts by all parties to ensure they deliver as contracted.
  • Support the managment of the contract with the major equipment supplier for the Gas Turbine and HRSG and resolve any technical question or issue that arises
  • Facilitate the major equipment hand off to the EPC and support building that into the contract
  • Accountable to deliver or oversee engineering work in all project stages from Front End engineering design through to detailed scope and construction & commissioning packages.
  • Accountable to coordinate scope development with the project stakeholders such as Plant Engineering, and the Operations Liaison to interpret their needs and the needs of the customer while representing them in the field.
  • Accountable for the development of Quality Control Plan, commissioning plans and coordinate/complete hold/witness points with the respected parties; EPC, Owner Engineer or others.
  • Accountable to the engineering design reviews of control documents prepared by EPC contractors, Owner Engineers, Altalink, other engineering and consults to ensure all contract obligations have been met in accordance with technical specifications and applicable codes and standards.
  • Accountable to research, analyze, and determine technically feasible options for emergent technical issues during projects.
  • Monitoring compliance to applicable codes, practices, QA/QC policies, performance standards and specifications
  • Accountable for the completion of the Repowering projects' MOCs
  • Accountable to assess technical risks associated with the assigned project and provide mitigation plans.
  • Accountable to utilize opportunities improving project delivery and provide value engineering solutions.
  • Accountable to support the Project Manager during the project lifecycle to the close out phase.
  • Accountable to the documentation control process ensuring that all required documents follow the standard, are received, organized, and disseminated as required.

Qualifications:

  • Alberta registered Mechanical or Electrical Professional Engineer.
  • 15+ years working in coal and gas power facilities.
  • 10+ years of project engineering and or project management experience.
  • Experience in the detailed engineering, construction, startup, and operation of gas turbine combined cycle (CCGT) power plants.
  • Specific experience relating to specification, procurement, construction, startup and operation of Gas Turbines (GTGs), Heat Recovery Steam Generators (HRSGs) and Steam Turbines (STGs).
  • Has demonstrated experience in troubleshooting and analyzing equipment performance problems and making recommendations for improvements.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of project engineering roles and accountabilities.
  • Must have basic computer skills, including the ability to send and retrieve email and access company web pages through the Internet and work in excel spread sheets.
  • Ability to create and deliver informative presentations in Powerpoint
  • Maintain a high profile for safety for himself and his co-workers
  • Must be able to work varying shifts if required.
  • Must have strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Must be able to work safely and effectively in a team environment, as well as with minimal supervision.
  • Must have physical endurance to withstand exposure to noise, dust, heat and cold.
  • Must have a valid class 5 Alberta driver s license.
  • Must be willing to travel to perform equipment inspections and design reviews
  • Must be willing to travel to owner engineering and EPC offices for extend periods of time.
