TransAlta Corporation is currently looking for one law student to participate in an approximately 4-month summer work term in our Calgary office, which has 8 lawyers. Over the course of the summer, you will have an opportunity to work among various legal functions, including Litigation, Contracts, Corporate Matters, and Ethics & Compliance.


  • Researching and reviewing a broad range of power and/or corporate/commercial legal issues, which may include topics relating to litigation, contracting, intellectual property, employment, and corporate governance matters
  • Identifying legal issues and using sound judgment to determine which legal risks can be assumed and which need to be mitigated
  • Leading the development of legal projects such as a contracts depository and litigation holds policy
  • Keeping current and advising on developments in the law
  • Establishing positive working relationships with other TransAlta business groups
  • Drafting memoranda and legal correspondence


  • Available for a 4-month term starting in May 2018
  • Legally entitled to work in Canada for the duration of the work term
  • Currently enrolled in the Faculty of Law, University of Calgary
